We prefer to operate CNC machines that are a bit faster than average even though
they may be older machines. For example, our older machines do not have very high
rapid movements or machining speeds because of being over ten years old. But
our Fadal has an SMTC (Side Mount Tool Changer) which allows for faster tool changes which means less time between tools that are cutting metal. Future machine acquisitions will have some of the best
available features such as higher rapid speed movements and machining speeds,
plus higher spindle rpms to allow for those machining speeds.
Our larger Fadal also has 4-axis capabilities which allows us more flexibility
in how we machine parts, mainly for the purpose of eliminating setups and operations
that would be needed to machine more complicated parts. In this way we can
be more competitive in our quoting for our customers as it takes us less time
to complete a run of parts, including the fewest setups needed.
We also have several high speed pallet (table changer) machines, and with a pallet system the CNC machine is operating nearly 100% of the time only taking a few seconds to
change out the pallets - finished parts for fresh material stock. Machines that
do not have a pallet capability are not machining as much time because the
operator has the process stopped for loading and unloading of parts.
